E. Satie | Trois gnossiennes op. 13 – Gnossienne n. 1 (1889-1890)
Probably no other musician left an eccentric legacy in the history of classical music as Satie did. A dropout from the Paris Conservatoire after poor grades, two expulsions and a difficult integration with the conservative teaching approach, Satie's radical and avant-garde character left a mark on all his works, among which the seven Gnossiennes are considered some of the most experimental and pioneering. Ethereal, imaginative, and minimalistic, the first Gnossienne - with its repetitive and hypnotic rhythms, dissonant and unconventional harmonies, and lack of clear tonal center - creates a sense of ambiguity and tension that has inspired generations of composers after Satie. The musical notation was also ahead of its time, lacking time signatures and bar lines to give the performer a greater degree of interpretive freedom.
