Paganini | 24 capricci op. 1, n. 5 (1820)
Paganini’s 24 Caprices are the paramount of violin virtuosity. They include almost any technical difficulty such as fast scales and arpeggios, double and triple stops, upbow staccato, ricochets, left hand pizzicato, parallel octaves and tenths, rapid shifting, and string crossings. Starting and ending with extremely fast and extended ascending arpeggios and descending scales, the Capriccio no.5 core section stress tests the player’s ricochet bowing skills with a hectic alternation of arpeggios and chromatic scales. The legend says that Paganini was able to play it on one string. We like to think it true.
