W.A. Mozart | Requiem in D minor K 626 – Lacrimosa (1791)
The astonishing beauty of Mozart’s Requiem has been shrouded in mystery since its very conception. Secretly commissioned by amateur composer Count von Walsegg with the purpose of dedicating it to his deceased wife as his own composition, the work was accepted by Mozart due to his disastrous economic conditions despite his deteriorating health. Worn out by illness and fatigue, Mozart died after completing only a limited part of the requiem, handing the work over to his friend Franz Xaver Sussmayer, who completed it following the composer’s instructions. Whoever and however composed it, the result is a sublime summation of Mozart’s genius, perfectly represented by the Lacrimosa, whose first 8 bars, just drafted, are Mozart’s very last original autograph composition, as well as one of the most touching moments in the history of music.
