Mozart | Fantasie in D moll KV 397 (1782)
Written in the summer of 1782 right after Mozart’s marriage with his beloved Costanze, the Fantasie in D minor is Mozart’s piano composition which most anticipates the romantic aesthetic, particularly that of Beethoven’s sonatas and Chopin’s impromptus. Following the structural freedom typical of the fantasie form, in slightly more than 100 bars Mozart shows an incredible alternation of mournful and mellow melodic lines, sudden fast scales, and rests, all the way to the Allegretto that ends the composition in a joyous D major that sounds like a return to the 18th century.
