G. Mahler | Symphony n. 5 - Trauermarsch - 1st trumpet in B (1901 - 1902)
Gustav Mahler’s 9 symphonies are among the most monumental works for orchestra ever composed, despite being conceived in the free time. Mahler was in fact first and foremost an acclaimed director all over Europe and at the Vienna Court Opera and would dedicate his summer holidays on lake Wörthersee to composition. Here he also composed the 5th symphony in a tumultuous time of his life, when he found the joy of marrying Alma Schindler after suffering a hemorrhage that almost led him to death in February 1901. Such feeling of resurrection shines through the whole 5th symphony and particularly through the iconic trumpet solo of the first movement – a quote to the Generalmarsch of the Austro-Hungarian Army – which intertwines with the orchestra evoking a sense of struggle and triumph.
