C. Debussy | Images oubliée, L 87 - Lent (melancolique et doux) (1894)
Debussy's composed the set of three piano pieces Images in 1894, which would be inedited until they were published in 1977 with the incisive adjective “oubliée” (forgotten). These “forgotten” gems display Debussy's early experimentation and refinement of his impressionistic and symbolistic style characterized by ethereal textures and subtle harmonic shifts. Of the three pieces, the first, “Slow, melancholic and sweet” is probably the most balanced in its evocativeness. It envelops the listener in a dreamlike atmosphere, with its delicate, wandering melodies and soft, shimmering chords which evoke a sense of nostalgia and introspection. Despite having been overlooked in Debussy's prolific oeuvre, "Images oubliées" remain a captivating glimpse into the early stages of his groundbreaking musical evolution.
