Brahms composed the 6 Klavierstücke Op. 118 during his summer vacations in Bad Ischl, at a time of his life when, after concluding his last symphonic production in 1887, composition had become almost a holiday hobby for him. At the age of 60, Brahms made the Klavierstücke an intimate summary of all his ability to reconcile rigorous classical education, profound emotional understanding of romanticism and a tension to innovation that has often been underestimated when compared to that of Wagner. The intermezzo n. 2 is the perfect representation of this reconciliation, with a delicate narrative line of exquisite sweetness that accompanies the whole piece over melodical variations of significant polyphonic and polyrhythmic complexity.
