Beethoven | Sonata for violin and piano n. 5 op. 24 – Allegro (1801)
Beethoven’s interest in the violin and piano duo dates back to 1783, when he composed his first, incomplete sonata at the age of 13. The Spring sonata, composed 18 years later, is a gem of Beethovenian optimism. Despite being composed just one year before the more famous “Kreutzer”, which is characterized by Beethoven’s intellectual and emotional typical intensity, the Spring has the joy and levity of Mozart’s heritage, a trait that is seldom seen in Beethoven’s mostly gloomy production. The first movement is particularly interesting for highlighting this emotional distance: between the lighthearted F major theme in the initial and final part of the piece, the central part indulges in a more introspective progression towards C minor.
